Artistic Licence Art-Net Parameter Controllable Device Integration Configuration
Caution
Compatibility Note: This information is a general guide and may be incomplete, may not match a specific project implementation, and is subject to change as supported products and versions evolve. Confirm the exact implementation and requirements for each project with Riedel and the relevant equipment vendor, then validate the required functions end to end in the target environment before deployment.
Configuration Overview
hi finds Art-Net Nodes by broadcast discovery on one IPv4 subnet. The Subnet setting decides where hi sends discovery and DMX output. hi and every Art-Net Node that it controls must share that subnet.
Caution
On connection, hi sends a zero-valued frame to every output Port discovered so far. Connect, reconnect, or change the subnet only when clearing those outputs is safe.
Before You Begin
-
Use Node admin and open Inventory > Nodes. See Manage Nodes.
-
Confirm the license and minimum hi version in Required Configuration.
-
Use the configuration tool of each Art-Net Node for the device-side steps.
-
Confirm the network access in Network Requirements. Art-Net has no authentication or encryption. Keep it on a dedicated lighting-control network.
Configure Art-Net Output
Use this configuration to control DMX channels of Art-Net Nodes from hi.
Device Configuration
-
Give each Art-Net Node an IPv4 address in the subnet that hi uses. The Art-Net specification defines
2.x.x.xas the primary and10.x.x.xas the secondary address scheme, and Nodes can also use DHCP. Confirm the address method with the Node vendor. Permit bidirectional UDP6454between hi and that subnet. -
Set the universe of each output Port to the universe that the lighting system uses. The Art-Net specification describes the Net, Sub-Net, and Universe port address. hi uses only the universe value of the Port. Use Net
0and Sub-Net0, or verify the output on Nodes that use other values. -
Give each Art-Net Node a recognizable short name, because hi shows that name on all Ports of the Node.
-
Check the failsafe state of each Art-Net Node. hi does not repeat ArtDmx frames, so the failsafe state decides the output when the Node receives no new data.
hi Configuration
-
Add the Art-Net Parameter Controllable Device integration (manufacturer Artistic Licence) in Inventory.
-
In the Settings group, replace the default Subnet value with the Art-Net subnet in CIDR notation, for example the subnet of the lighting network with its prefix length.
-
Create the Node. hi sends a discovery request and continues as soon as the first Art-Net Node replies. If no Node replies within 10 seconds, the connection fails. hi then sends a zero-valued frame to every output Port discovered so far. Nodes that reply later are not cleared.
-
Confirm that each output Port appears as
DMX Output <number> - <name>, with the Parameters Channel: 1 to Channel: 512. -
Assign the channels that operators need to the Control Panel or a Rule.

Common Checks
|
Symptom |
Check |
|---|---|
|
The Node does not connect. |
Confirm that at least one Art-Net Node replies on the configured subnet within 10 seconds, and that the network carries IPv4 broadcast traffic on UDP |
|
An expected output Port is missing. |
Confirm that the Art-Net Node address is inside the Subnet range. |
|
A channel change has no effect. |
Confirm that the Net and Sub-Net of the output Port are |
|
Outputs go dark when hi connects. |
This is expected. hi sends a zero-valued frame to every output discovered so far on connection. |
Verify the Configuration
Confirm that hi lists the expected Art-Net Nodes, output Ports, and universes. Change one channel that drives no live fixture, and confirm that the Art-Net Node outputs the new value.
