Grass Valley Kahuna / Kula Series Integration Configuration
Caution
Compatibility Note: This information is a general guide and may be incomplete, may not match a specific project implementation, and is subject to change as supported products and versions evolve. Confirm the exact implementation and requirements for each project with Riedel and the relevant equipment vendor, then validate the required functions end to end in the target environment before deployment.
Configuration Overview
The Kahuna and Kula integration uses two independent connections. The GV Kahuna Tally connection receives Tally from the switcher. The TSL connection sends dynamic Source labels to it. Configure Tally first, then add Dynamic Labels when the switcher displays hi names.

hi sends Source names to the switcher through TSL. |
The switcher displays labels from hi. |
Caution
The two connections use different Ports. Do not enter the Tally Port for the label connection.
Before You Begin
-
Use Node admin and open Inventory > Nodes. See Manage Nodes.
-
Confirm the license in Required Configuration.
-
Use the Grass Valley tooling for the switcher. See the vendor documentation for the Tally and TSL interfaces.
-
Confirm the network access in Network Requirements.
-
Record the switcher address and the separate Tally and dynamic-label Ports.
Configure Receive Tally
Use this configuration to receive Tally from the switcher.
Device Configuration
-
On the switcher, open Engineering Config > Protocols. Set Protocol Type to Tally & UMD, select Kahuna Tally in Available Protocols, and select Load.
-
Select Configure..., set the connection, select Apply, and then select Activate. The protocol is available only when the matching Kahuna protocol option is installed.
-
Record the Tally Port. hi defaults to
50001.
hi Configuration
-
Add the Kahuna / Kula Series integration in Inventory.
-
Enter the switcher address and the Tally Port. hi defaults to
50001. -
Create the Node and wait for it to initialize.
-
Assign the received Tally to hi Tally Sources. See Manage Tally.
Configure Send Dynamic Labels
Use this configuration after Tally works and the switcher must display hi names.
hi sends the label of Source N to TSL address N − 1. This integration has no TSL Address Offset setting.
Device Configuration
-
On the switcher, open Engineering Config > Protocols. Set Protocol Type to Tally & UMD, load TSL UMD (Input Only), and configure and activate it. The switcher maps each received Source name to a UMD address.
-
In Engineering Config > Input Setup, enable Router Overwrite so that received names replace the default input names.
-
Record the Port, TSL variant, and transport of the label receiver. hi defaults to
50014.
hi Configuration
-
Open the Node.
-
In the Dynamic Labels capability, enter the switcher address and the label Port. hi defaults to
50014. -
Select the Label Protocol and Label Transport that the switcher uses.

Common Checks
|
Symptom |
Check |
|---|---|
|
Tally arrives but labels do not. |
Confirm the label Port, Label Protocol, and Label Transport. They are separate from the Tally connection. |
|
Labels arrive but Tally does not. |
Confirm that the Kahuna Tally interface is enabled on the switcher and that the Tally Port matches. It is separate from the label connection. |
Verify the Configuration
Compare Tally in hi with the switcher. Change a Source name path in hi and confirm that the label updates at the switcher display.
