Sony Production Switchers (Serial Tally) Integration Configuration

Sony Production Switchers (Serial Tally) Integration Configuration

Caution

Compatibility Note: This information is a general guide and may be incomplete, may not match a specific project implementation, and is subject to change as supported products and versions evolve. Confirm the exact implementation and requirements for each project with Riedel and the relevant equipment vendor, then validate the required functions end to end in the target environment before deployment.

Configuration Overview

A Sony production switcher connects to hi through Sony Serial Tally. Older switcher systems provide Serial Tally only on serial ports, and newer systems also provide it over IP. Choose the configuration that matches the switcher.

Configuration

What hi Sees

Use When

Serial Tally over IP

hi connects directly to the Serial Tally endpoint of the switcher.

The switcher provides Serial Tally on an IP interface.

Serial Tally over a Serial Gateway

hi connects to a serial-over-IP gateway that carries the RS-422 Serial Tally.

The switcher provides Serial Tally only on a serial port.

Caution

The Sony Serial Tally protocol uses special characters in the serial data that not every serial-over-IP gateway can translate. Use a Moxa gateway. hi uses a control port on the Moxa gateway to generate additional data that the protocol requires, and a gateway from another manufacturer can fail to work as expected.

Before You Begin

  • Use Node admin and open Inventory > Nodes. See Manage Nodes.

  • Confirm the license and minimum hi version in Required Configuration.

  • Use the Sony menu tools and the Switcher Control System of the switcher. Sony service personnel may have changed the commissioning credentials, so confirm them with the Sony installer.

  • Confirm the network access in Network Requirements.

  • Confirm the Sony Serial Tally configuration and whether the deployment uses direct IP or an RS-422 gateway.

  • Record the data endpoint and, when used, the Moxa control port.

Configure Serial Tally Over IP

Use this configuration when the switcher provides Serial Tally on an IP interface.

Device Configuration

Caution

Assign an address to the UTIL LAN port of the second SIU only when the system has a second SIU. Otherwise communication between the mixer components breaks and the mixer stops working. Leave the second SIU settings at their default values.

  1. Configure Serial Tally on the switcher menu PC, and set a Tally Master in the system. Only the System Interface Unit (SIU) that is set as Tally Master provides Serial Tally over IP on its UTIL LAN port.

  2. Connect the UTIL Ethernet port of the SIU to the control network, or make sure a route to it exists.

  3. Open the Maintenance interface of the Switcher Control System, and assign an IP address that the hi servers can reach to the UTIL LAN port of the SIU.

  4. Restart the Switcher Control System when the interface asks for it.

  5. Create a Serial Tally port on the switcher and record its port number.

  6. Set the Tally data size of the Serial Tally output to 128 bits or 256 bits and record it.

hi Configuration

  1. Add the XVS / MVS Series integration (manufacturer Sony) in Inventory.

  2. Enter the IP address of the switcher.

  3. Enter the Serial Tally port that you configured on the switcher.

  4. Leave Moxa Control Port at 0.

  5. Set Tally Data Size to the value that you configured on the switcher.

  6. Create the Node.

Configure Serial Tally Over a Serial Gateway

Use this configuration when the switcher provides Serial Tally only on a serial port.

Device Configuration

  1. Configure Serial Tally on the switcher for the serial port that you use, and set its Tally data size to 128 bits or 256 bits.

  2. Connect the serial port of the switcher to the gateway. Check the pinning of the serial cable against the documentation of the switcher and the gateway.

  3. Configure the gateway as described in its manual. Set the data port and the control port that hi uses.

  4. Switch a Source on the mixer and watch the RX and TX lights of the gateway, when it has them. If the lights do not blink, no data reaches the gateway. Check the Serial Tally configuration of the switcher, the Source that you switched, and the cable pinning.

hi Configuration

  1. Add the XVS / MVS Series integration (manufacturer Sony) in Inventory.

  2. Enter the IP address of the gateway.

  3. Enter the data port that you configured on the gateway.

  4. Enter the Moxa control port that you configured on the gateway. For serial port 1 of a Moxa gateway, the control port is 966. See Required Configuration for the default ports.

  5. Set Tally Data Size to the value that you configured on the switcher.

  6. Create the Node.

Common Checks

Symptom

Check

The Node does not synchronize.

Verify the Serial Tally mode of the switcher, the serial settings of the gateway, and both endpoints independently.

No data reaches the gateway.

Switch a Source on the mixer and check the RX and TX lights of the gateway. If they do not blink, check the Serial Tally configuration, the Source that you switched, and the cable pinning.

A gateway from another manufacturer does not work.

Use a Moxa gateway. The Serial Tally protocol uses special characters that not every gateway can translate.

Verify the Configuration

Wait for the Node to synchronize. Switch a Source on the mixer and confirm that the matching Tally appears in hi. Then compare the bus state and Source labels with the switcher. Assign the Tally Sources in hi, and test a supported Crosspoint that is not on air.
