Advanced Media Production Platform. Grass Valley's cloud-native media production framework. hi integrates using a REST API for workload discovery and routing. |

AMWA |
Advanced Media Workflow Association, the organization that develops the NMOS family of open specifications for networked media systems. See the NMOS Core Integration . |

Art-Net |
A protocol for transmitting DMX512 lighting control data over Ethernet, developed by Artistic Licence. |
|
Audio Shuffling |
The reordering of audio channels within a Port Container at routing time, allowing operators to remap audio essences without additional hardware. |

Backup |
A supported configuration-data archive containing the Topology, Snapshots, Rules, Tags, users, Presets, templates, and related settings. A Backup does not transfer licensing or activation identity. |
|
Base Requirement |
The foundation or other license that must also be present. Existing hiBase installations use hiBase as the foundation; current bundles use hiCore. Other named dependencies remain separate unless the license documentation says they are included.

Camera Control Unit. A device used to remotely adjust camera parameters such as iris, gain, and color balance. |

CE Marking |
A manufacturer's marking indicating that a product has been assessed against applicable EU harmonisation legislation where CE marking is required. It is not a general approval issued by the EU. European Commission guidance . |

CNAME |
Canonical Name DNS record. It aliases one hostname to another; a firewall using a hostname may need to resolve the complete alias chain.

Common Ground |
An electrical reference shared by multiple circuits. All hiContact inputs share one common ground; they are not individually ground-isolated.

Connection State |
The current communication state reported for a Node or service. Interpret each state using the Interface reference rather than color alone. |
|
Control Panel |
The primary routing and control interface in hi, providing Source/Destination selection, Presets, filtering, and Parameter Control. |
|
Crosspoint |
A connection between a Source and a Destination in a routing matrix. Setting a Crosspoint routes the Source signal to the Destination. |
|
Crosspoint Lock |
A lock placed on a Destination's Crosspoint to prevent changes to its current routing. Locked Crosspoints are protected from accidental or automated re-routing until the lock is explicitly released. |

Dante® |
An audio-over-IP networking protocol by Audinate, used for low-latency digital audio distribution over standard Ethernet networks. |
|
Declaration of Conformity (DoC) |
A formal manufacturer statement identifying a product and the conformity requirements it declares the product meets. Its required contents and legal effect depend on the applicable jurisdiction and product legislation. |

Destination |
A Port or Portal on which a Source signal is routed during a Take. In the Control Panel, operators select Destinations from the Destination column to complete a routing action. |
|
Direct Take |
A routing mode where selecting a Source immediately connects it to the selected Destination without requiring a separate Take action. |
|
DMX512 |
Digital Multiplex. A standard protocol for controlling stage lighting, effects, and dimmers. |
|
DNS |
Domain Name System. Resolves hostnames to network records such as IP addresses; firewall rules that use a hostname depend on working DNS resolution.

Dynamic Label |
A label that follows the Signal Path and updates automatically as routing changes, keeping Multiviewers and UMDs in sync without manual intervention. |
|
Edit Mode |
A Topology Diagram state that allows engineers to add, remove, and rewire Nodes and Ports. Changes made in Edit Mode are not active until they are applied. |
|
Ember+ |
A protocol for device Parameter Control and monitoring, commonly used in broadcast and pro AV environments. |
|
EMC |
Electromagnetic compatibility: the ability of equipment to operate as intended in its electromagnetic environment without causing or suffering unacceptable electromagnetic disturbance. European Commission overview . |

Entitlement Basis |
The unit used to count license quantity, such as an installation, concurrent session, active third-party client, peer connection at each hiMesh endpoint, or project-specific deployment.

Entra ID |
Microsoft's identity and access management service (formerly Azure Active Directory), used for single sign-on and user provisioning in hi. |
|
Essence |
The most atomic signal component in the hi Layer model - for example, a single video channel or a single mono audio channel. |
|
Essence Layer |
The lowest Layer in the hi three-Layer signal model. Ports on the Essence Layer represent indivisible signal items such as a single audio channel or a single video quadrant. Tally is calculated at this Layer. |
|
FCC |
Federal Communications Commission, the United States agency that regulates interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite, and cable. A reference in a product declaration is not, by itself, a statement that every model is approved. |
|
Floating Capacity |
A license entitlement checked out while its associated supported panel is active and returned to the available pool when that panel is disabled or removed.

Floating License |
A license model where active sessions check out a license from a shared pool and release it on logout, allowing shift-based operations to share a limited number of hiUser licenses. |
|
Flow Layer |
The middle Layer in the hi three-Layer signal model. A Flow Port represents a transport-level signal (for example, an SDI stream or a SMPTE ST 2110-30 audio stream) that can carry multiple Essences and is the unit at which routing is performed. |
|
Flow Port |
A routable signal at the Flow Layer. A Flow Port typically represents a transport-level signal such as an SDI stream carrying video and embedded audio channels. |
|
FQDN |
Fully Qualified Domain Name: the complete DNS hostname used to identify a network endpoint, rather than a fixed IP address.

Free-D |
An open camera tracking protocol originally developed by BBC R&D, used for real-time position and orientation data from camera rigs. |
|
Gang Take |
A Multiselect Mode action that connects multiple Sources to multiple Destinations simultaneously in a single action. |
|
GPI |
General Purpose Input. An input signal received from an external device, used to trigger actions or convey status in the hi system. |
|
GPIO |
General Purpose Input/Output. Configurable hardware signals used for Tally, triggers, and external control integration through hiContact boxes. |
|
GPO |
General Purpose Output. An output signal sent to an external device, typically used for Tally lights or machine control. |
|
Guided Filtering |
Automatic removal of irrelevant Tags from the Control Panel filter list based on the current selection context, reducing clutter and speeding up Source/Destination navigation. |
|
Hardware Panel |
A supported physical operator panel connected to the hi system for tactile routing or Parameter Control. License requirements depend on the panel integration. Several Hardware Panels can be combined into a Panel Group. |
|
hiAccess |
The software license enabling Microsoft Entra ID integration for synchronized user administration, single sign-on, and group-based access control. |
|
hiAdvancedWorkflows |
A released license for advanced workflow features. It replaces hiPowerWidgets in new orders; previously issued hiPowerWidgets licenses remain valid.

A Riedel hardware device that is added to hi as a Node. Its menu is configured with Presets, Folders, and other items.

One per active third-party client, such as a Northbound client or a supported third-party Hardware Panel. hiLink requires the installation-wide hiDock license; user-session capacity is counted separately through included sessions and hiUser. |

A pre-release, installation-wide license for hi-to-hi federation. It requires hiAdvancedWorkflows and includes one local hiMeshConnect entitlement. |

hiMeshConnect |
A pre-release peer-connection entitlement required at each connected hi system endpoint. Each hiMesh includes one local entitlement; additional peers require additional local hiMeshConnect licenses. |

hiNDI |
The software license enabling NDI integration and discovery service, allowing hi to route and control NDI video endpoints on the network. |
|
hiNMOS |
The software license for AMWA NMOS IS-04 registry and IS-05 connection-management capabilities. See the NMOS Core Integration for protocol scope. |

hiOrchestration |
The software license enabling network orchestrator integration with systems such as Nevion VideoIPath and Imagine SDNO for automated network path provisioning. |
|
hiPowerWidgets |
An existing license for advanced workflow Widgets and Monitor Wall features. hiAdvancedWorkflows replaces it in new orders, but previously issued hiPowerWidgets licenses remain valid. |
|
hiSwarm |
The software license enabling a project-specific multi-server hi deployment. Availability and recovery behavior depend on the commissioned system design. |

hiUser |
A floating license that adds one concurrent user or applicable Hardware Panel session beyond the two sessions included with hiBase or hiCore; one included session is reserved for the administrator.

IGMP |
Internet Group Management Protocol. It manages IPv4 multicast group membership so network equipment can direct multicast traffic to interested receivers.

The two concurrent sessions included with hiBase and hiCore; one is reserved for the administrator. Additional hiUser licenses cover peak concurrent sessions beyond this included capacity.

Integration Request |
A request for Riedel to assess a device, service, or control capability not covered by an existing supported integration. Submit it through Riedel Customer Success; a request is an assessment, not a support or delivery commitment.

IP mapping |
The recorded relation between the Ports of a baseband Node and the IP resources of an NMOS Node. It is listed on the IP mapping tab of the baseband Node.

KNX |
An open standard for building automation (lighting, blinds, HVAC), commonly used in smart venue and facility management. |
|
Label |
A Port naming field. A non-GPIO Node's Labels tab presents the read-only Name from Device field (the Original Name) and editable Primary Name, Panel Name, Monitoring Name, and Mixer Name fields. GPIO Nodes use a separate Ports tab. |
|
Label Override |
A user or Hardware Panel profile setting that selects the Port name property shown on its Control Panel or Hardware Panel instead of the default Label Source.

Layer |
A level of signal representation in the hi system: Physical, Flow, or Essence. Related Ports describe connectivity, routable signals, and individual signal components.

License Bundle |
A bundle of features sold as a license on the pricelist, such as hiBase, hiCore, or hiGlue. The bundle resolves to Options in the hi system.

License Lifecycle |
The commercial catalog status of a license: Released, Pre-release, Replaced, or Discontinued. These labels describe offering and packaging status; previously issued licenses remain valid as described in the license documentation.

The catalog classification of a license as Perpetual, Per-Session, or Per-Client. It describes duration or capacity class; the Entitlement Basis determines the quantity to count.

A controlled display system comprising Multiviewers and monitors. hi provides an interface for organizing and controlling that system; the wall itself is not merely the interface.

Message Queuing Telemetry Transport. A lightweight messaging protocol used for device-to-device communication and IoT integration. |

Multicast Address |
The address of the multicast stream of an IP Port. It is allocated from the multicast networks and address ranges that are defined on the Multicast Addresses tab of the NMOS Node.

Multiviewer |
A device that combines multiple video signals onto a single display output, typically used in control rooms and monitoring environments. |
|
Multiviewer Head |
A control unit or display section within a Multiviewer that manages video inputs, compositing, and output for a subset of the monitored signals. A single Multiviewer can have multiple Heads, each independently configurable. |
|
NDI® |
Network Device Interface. A video-over-IP protocol by Vizrt NDI AB for low-latency video transport over standard networks. |
|
NMOS |
Networked Media Open Specifications, a family of open media-networking specifications developed by AMWA. This documentation uses IS-04 for discovery and registration, IS-05 for connection management, and IS-07 for event exchange and control. See the NMOS Core Integration . |
|
Node |
A representation of a device, service, or component within the hi system. Nodes have Ports, capabilities, and parameters that model the behavior of the underlying equipment. |
|
Node List |
The inventory view within hi that displays all Nodes in the system along with their connection status, type, and configuration details. |
|
Northbound Interface |
An interface that allows external automation systems and control solutions to connect to hi using SW-P-08 and control a mapped routing matrix. Requires hiDock. |
|
OCP |
Operator Control Panel. A hardware interface for on-set or studio operator control of routing, parameter adjustment, and device functions. |
|
Option |
A feature flag resolved from a license bundle to enable a capability in the hi system. Options are not licenses or separate pricelist products.

Opto-Isolated Input |
An input whose signal is electrically isolated from a device's internal control electronics. On hiContact, all inputs share a common ground, and their DC voltage limits are specified on the hiContact Mark 3 page . |

Original Name |
The default name of a Port as provided by the underlying device. Original Names cannot be edited directly; use Primary Name, Panel Name, Monitoring Name, or Mixer Name to override how the Port is displayed. |

OSC |
Open Sound Control. A protocol for communication between multimedia devices, commonly used for lighting, audio, and show control. |
|
Panel Group |
A Node that combines several Hardware Panels. Its member panels are arranged on the Panel Group Setup tab.

Parameter Container |
A Node-level grouping of pinned device parameters, including combined compatible numeric parameters, with their Port assignments.

Parameter Control |
The ability to read and write device parameters (for example, camera iris, audio gain, or switcher transitions) from within hi, using protocols such as Ember+, SNMP, or VISCA. |

Pelco-D / Pelco-P |
Serial protocols for PTZ camera control, developed by Pelco. Widely supported across security and production camera systems. |
|
Physical Layer |
The top Layer in the hi three-Layer signal model. A Physical Port represents a physical connector (BNC, RJ45, XLR, fiber) on a device and can carry one or more Flows. |
|
Physical Port |
A Port representing a physical connector on a device, such as a BNC, RJ45, or XLR jack. Physical Ports exist on the Physical Layer in the hi model. |
|
PJLink |
A standard protocol for controlling and monitoring projectors and flat-panel displays in AV installations. |
|
PoE |
Power over Ethernet. A standard that delivers electrical power over twisted-pair Ethernet cabling to powered devices, used by many IP cameras, network switches, and hiContact GPIO boxes. |
|
Port |
An input, output, or bidirectional interface modeled on a Node. Its Layer describes a physical connector, routable signal, or individual Essence.

|
Port Container |
A group of Ports that route together as a single unit. Used to bundle related signals (for example, video plus associated audio channels) so they move as one entity during a Take. |
|
Port Container Template |
A template that defines a Port Container's structure as an ordered set of slot definitions (positions and format types) before real Ports are assigned. A template can restrict connections to containers built from the same template (Connect Matching Only) and can automatically create Port Containers for Nodes whose Port names match a defined postfix scheme. |
|
Port Picker |
A UI component within the Control Panel that allows operators to browse and select individual Ports from the Topology for routing or configuration. |
|
Portal |
An operator-created, one-slot virtual routing endpoint. Its slot can wrap a device Port, connect to another Portal, or remain unassigned. Operators route using its persistent name while an administrator can reassign its underlying connection. A device integration may create a separate Port with Portal behavior; hi treats that as a bidirectional device endpoint, not as an operator-created Portal.

A named collection that organizes Presets on the Control Panel's Preset bar. Expand the group to select an individual Preset.

Product Code |
The identifier for a software entitlement in the hi licensing catalog. It is not a price or a hardware ordering identifier; hardware uses its SAP SKU.

Provisioning |
Preparing a device or network service for operation by applying its required configuration and making the required resources or paths available. The specific actions depend on the product and integration. |
|
PSU |
Power Supply Unit. An external unit that provides electrical power to equipment; check each hardware page for the compatible supply and whether it is included. |
|
PTZ |
Pan, tilt, and zoom movement of a camera. The specific controls available depend on the camera and its supported integration. |
|
RCP |
Remote Control Panel. A software or hardware interface for off-site operator control of routing, parameter adjustment, and device functions, typically over IP networks. |
|
Relay Contact |
An electromechanical switch output. hiContact relay contacts do not provide a voltage source and may only switch an external DC circuit within the published limits; see the hiContact Mark 3 warning and specifications . |

Replaces / Replaced by |
A license relationship for new orders. A replacement bundle does not invalidate a license that was already issued.

Restricted Mode |
An administrator connection restricted by invalid licenses or unavailable user-license capacity. It opens licensing so a System administrator can address the reported condition.

An automation definition combining triggers (events) with actions, managed by the hi Rule Engine. |

The hi subsystem that evaluates Rules in real time, executing configured actions when trigger conditions are met. Used for automated routing, Tally forwarding, parameter changes, and event-driven workflows. |

Rule Group |
A collection of Rules that can be enabled or disabled as a unit for operational mode switching. |
|
sACN / E1.31 |
Streaming Architecture for Control Networks. An ESTA standard for transmitting DMX512 lighting control data over IP networks. |
|
SAP SKU |
The SAP Stock Keeping Unit used as the orderable identifier for a Riedel hardware item. It is distinct from a product's regulatory model or device type number. |

SDI |
Serial Digital Interface. The standard for digital video transmission in professional media environments. |
|
SDNO |
Software-Defined Network Orchestrator. In this catalog, it refers to Imagine Communications Magellan SDNO, whose REST API supplies metadata; the associated LRC Plus connection performs Crosspoint routing.

Shader Group |
A shading position configuration linking camera control units to GPI inputs for joystick-based shader operation. |

Signal Path |
The complete route a signal takes from its origin through one or more routers to its final Destination. hi traces Signal Paths to calculate Tally and propagate labels. |

Signal Path Inspector |
A visual diagnostic tool that traces and displays the complete signal route from Source to Destination through the Topology, showing every intermediate Node and Port along the path. |
|
SMPTE ST 2022 |
SMPTE standards for video transport over IP, including ST 2022-6 (uncompressed SDI over IP) and ST 2022-7 (seamless protection switching). |
|
SMPTE ST 2110 |
A suite of SMPTE standards for professional media transport over IP, covering separate essence streams for video (ST 2110-20), audio (ST 2110-30), and ancillary data (ST 2110-40). |
|
Snapshot |
A saved operational state - including connections, parameters, labels, Tags, Port Container configurations, and Tag assignments - that can be recalled to restore a known configuration. |
|
SNMP |
Simple Network Management Protocol. Used for device parameter monitoring and control in network-managed equipment. |
|
Source |
A Port or Portal from which a signal is routed during a Take. In the Control Panel, operators select Sources from the Source column to initiate a routing action. |
|
SRT |
Secure Reliable Transport. An open-source video transport protocol designed for low-latency, secure streaming over unpredictable networks. |
|
Static Preset |
A Preset with fixed Port assignments that always reference the same Sources and Destinations regardless of filtering context, unlike dynamic Presets which adapt to the current view. |
|
SW-P-08 |
Pro-Bel SW-P-08. An industry-standard protocol for router matrix control, used by hi's Northbound Interface. |
|
Tag |
A label used for organizing, filtering, and controlling access to Ports within hi. |
|
Take |
The action of connecting a Source to a Destination. A Take sets the corresponding Crosspoint in the routing matrix. |
|
Take Mode |
A Preset setting that determines how Sources and Destinations are connected: Take, Direct Take, or Single Destination. |
|
Tally |
On-air indicator information distributed to cameras, Multiviewers, and panels. Red Tally indicates program (on-air); green Tally indicates preview (next). |
|
Tally Source |
A Tally input from a device or external system (for example, a vision mixer program output or an external Tally control) that hi uses to calculate on-air Tally status for downstream Ports. |
|
Tieline |
A dedicated connection between routers that carries signals between systems, allowing hi to route across multiple devices by chaining intermediate paths through the Topology. |
|
TLS Inspection |
A network security function that intercepts and decrypts TLS traffic for inspection, then may establish a separate encrypted connection. It is unsupported for the Riedel licensing-service endpoint; see Network and Firewall Ports . |

Topology |
The virtual model of all devices and their interconnections (wiring) in the hi system. The Topology is built and maintained in the Topology Diagram. |
|
Topology Diagram |
The visual interface in hi for viewing, editing, and managing the Topology. In Edit Mode, engineers can add, remove, and rewire Nodes and Ports; in Browse Mode, which is read-only, operators monitor the current state. |
|
Topology Simulation |
The model of the physical installation represented as Nodes and Links in hi. The Topology enables automatic Tally propagation, Signal Path tracing, Dynamic Labels, and topology-aware routing checks. |
|
TSL |
Television Systems Ltd. Refers to the TSL UMD protocol for under-monitor display control and Tally transport. |
|
UMD |
Under Monitor Display. A label display positioned below or above a monitor that shows the current Source name. hi updates UMDs automatically as routing changes. |
|
VDCP |
Video Disk Communications Protocol. A protocol for controlling video servers, clip playback, and recording. |
|
VIP |
Virtual IP address. A client-access mechanism that may be included in a commissioned multi-server design. Use the hostname or address supplied for the installation. |
|
VISCA |
A serial protocol for PTZ camera control, developed by Sony, supporting pan, tilt, zoom, and focus operations. |
|
VLAN |
Virtual Local Area Network. A logical segmentation of an Ethernet network that separates traffic into distinct Layer 2 networks.

WEEE |
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment. The term used for electrical/electronic equipment waste addressed by EU collection and treatment rules. European Commission overview . |

Widget |
A configurable control for a supported resource or task in the Control Panel, such as a parameter, Video Server Player, or Snapshot.

Widget Group |
An arrangement of reusable Widgets for an operational task. Control Panel Presets identify the groups available to their users. Groups reserved for simplified user assignments are separate.

Wiring |
A connection between two Ports in the Topology representing a physical cable or logical link. Wiring defines how signals can travel between Nodes and is the basis for Signal Path calculation. |
